Back in the days of ancient civilizations, everyday items like clothing and bedding were luxuries reserved for the social elites.
Even then, comfort definitely wasn’t a priority in the slightest. Most pillows were made entirely of wood or stone, with a groove in the middle for someone’s cranium.
Although it doesn’t look especially comfortable, “pillows” like the ones that were used in Egypt have been found to improve posture and relieve back/neck pains.
When there was a funeral held, the necks of the deceased would be propped up by one of the stone pillows to support their spirit in the afterlife.
If you’re poor…sorry. You only get to sleep on the cold, unforgiving floor. Part of me thinks that might be a better alternative, though…
