The condition wasn’t that mysterious at all (although certainly fascinating), but what it caused was beyond disaster.
What was the most mysterious medical condition you have ever seen
Hair tourniquets.
You might have heard about them, and if you have children, you might have seen them up close and personal. Hairs or a thread of cloth that tightly wraps around a kid’s toe, finger or other appendage during sleep, and which slowly constricts and disrupts the blood flow.
It can lead to tissue death and even amputation, but usually it’s not that bad. Usually.
In this particular case — the mom is a friend of my girlfriend’s — the swelling was awful and the little finger was badly discolored, and the mother panicked. And in her hurry to help her baby, she instantly removed the hairs. It’s what we all would do.
Not much later the baby started to have breathing problems and convulse, and went into cardiac arrest. When the ambulance arrived, all was already lost.
By freeing her baby’s little finger, a blood clot from the finger top was released into his little body, and had caused lethal thrombosis. He also might have experienced a fatal sepsis caused by gangrene in his finger.
The doctor’s weren’t sure.
